Teaching Kids about Money, Why and How ....

In the current materialistic world, it is very important to teach our kids about money. We should make them aware about why we should save and what is the value of money. In this post we will learn few things which can be used to make our kids more aware and sensible about money.

1. Saving Habit through a transparent Jar/Piggy Bank

The normal piggy banks are good, but it doesn’t give kids a visual. Instead of that if we use a clear jar, they can see the money growing. Yesterday, they had two hundred-rupee notes and today they got one more fifty rupee note! We can talk to them about this and make a big deal about it growing!

2. Show them that stuff costs money

We need to take action rather than just saying, for example when buying a toy for him, ask him to take out some money from his piggy bank and let him physically hand over the money to the shopkeeper. This simple action will have more impact than a five-minute lecture.

3. Set an example

A study made in one UK university found that money habits in children are formed by the time they’re 7 years old. Means they are watching us. If we are spending carelessly for anything or everything they’ll eventually notice. Or if we and our spouse spouse are arguing about money, they’ll notice that too. We should set healthy example for them and they’ll be much more likely to follow it when they get older.

4. Give commissions, not allowances

We can Pay our kids some commissions based on chores they do around the house like taking out the trash, cleaning their room, or helping in kitchen. This will make them understand that money is earned—it’s not just given to them.

5. Show opportunity cost

We should make them understand how to take decisions and what is the opportunity cost. For example, by telling him, “If you buy this video game, then you won’t have the money to buy that pair of sport shoes.” he should be able to weigh decisions and understand the possible outcomes.

6. Stress the importance of giving

Not just earning but giving is equally important. Once they start making a little money, we should teach them about giving. They can pick a temple, charity or even someone they know who needs a little help. Eventually, they’ll see how giving doesn’t just affect the people they give to, but the giver as well.

7. Avoid impulse buys

“Dad, I just saw this new game. My friend has it! Can we buy it please?” have you come across with this type of requests by your kids?  Instead of giving in, let your child know they can use their hard-earned commission to pay for it. But encourage your child to wait at least a day before they purchase anything over Rupees 100. It will likely still be there tomorrow, and they’ll be able to make that money decision with a level head (rather than an impulsive buy) the next day.

Teaching your children about money at any stage is going to take time on your part. It won’t always be easy. But if you want your children to know how to successfully manage their money when they get older, taking the time now will be worth it.

One of the best ways to teach your kids about handling money is to give them a chance to make some of their own!

The New Financial year with new way of managing Money

April starts with a new financial year, so let’s plan this year in a better way to manage our money and wealth with some simple steps.

1.   We can increase our monthly investment at the starting of the month. If you have got an increment then put some part of it into the monthly contribution of your investments.

2.   Keeping the account details updated is very important. Check that nominees, address, mobile no., email etc are updated in your all accounts i.e. Savings Accounts, Demat, Trading account and FDs etc.

3.   Make a budget for the year, with provisions for expenses, investments, and other requirements. Also plan to boost your income through different passive/active means

4.    Corona period has taught us that emergency can come any time and, in any way, So let’s start to have an emergency corpus which can be equivalent to 3-6 months expenses. We can keep this money in short term debt funds/savings account.

5.   Tax saving is a very important aspect and all of us need to plan it well before the financial year ends. As we get the projections for current year’s income, we should plan our tax planning right away.

6.    As time moves on our risk profile and portfolio allocation need to be reviewed on regular basis so as to keep it align with our future goals and requirements.

7.   We have lot of festivals and social gatherings and we need money to properly enjoy /celebrate them. A proper fund allocation is required to enjoy those moments; hence we should keep aside some funds for this purpose.

8.   In India we love gold and especially at the time of festivals/social gathering. We can put some money in gold bonds/ETF which can be good for diversifications perspective also.

9.    We should maintain proper records of all our investments and financial documents which can be easily assessed and understood by our loved ones in our absence, we should also keep it updated on regular basis.

10. As life moves on so as our future goals and plans. We should review our financial goals and plans and keep them align with our portfolio/investments.

11. Kids should know the value and importance of money. We should teach our kids about the importance of money and basics of money management.

12. Before the closing of the year, we need to check all our tax saving and other compliance i.e. advance tax, GST returns, TDS filings are on place so as to not repent later.

Things to review before the Financial Year Ends

In few weeks the current financial year is coming to an end. Financial year is very important for tax planning, budgeting and other financial related matters. So let’s look at various points and understand that what we need to do before the completion of this year.

1. Utilise your tax saving investments

Every year you can invest up to Rs 1.5 lakh in certain tax savings instruments like Tax Saver Mutual Funds, PPF, Insurance, Tax Saver FDs, etc which are tax exempt under section 80C. Further you can also save upto 50,000 in NPS under 80 CCD(1) as well as in Mediclaim policies for self and parents (upto 1 lakhs under section 80D) Make sure you are maxing out on these. Your HR will usually require investment proofs before year end so try and finish this off before then. Consult your financial advisor on which 80C investments to make as per your risk profile.

2. Manage Capital Gains/Losses

Now Long-term Capital Gain Tax (LTCG) is applicable for equity and related investments over and above of Rs. 1 lakhs profit. So if you have investments in equities and need money in near term better to book profit accordingly. You can also book losses and set off with profits but remember that Short-term capital loss can be set off against both long-term and short-term capital gain but Long-term capital loss can only be adjusted towards long-term capital gains.

3. Pay off high-cost debt

If you have any outstanding on high cost debt like credit card’s dues, make it your first priority to pay that off. Interest rates charged by credit cards are exorbitant and can go up to 40-50% per annum (compared to 15% for a personal loan). It is even worth borrowing some amount from your friend or parents or even personal loan and pay off your credit card debt immediately. You can slowly return them the money from your savings.

4. Save TDS

Fixed deposits and recurring deposit holders are afraid of the deduction of TDS. If you currently earn more than Rs. 10,000, Banks may cut TDS. To save TDS, filling in Form 15G or Form 15H is preferable, you need to file it in the first week of the starting of the financial year (i.e. April’22) so that tax is not deducted for next financial year.

5. Review Financial Goals

Take stock of your progress on all your financial goals and check if you are on track to achieving them in time. If needed you may have to top some of them up to get them back on track. In case you haven’t laid down any financial goals for yourself yet, this might be a good time to do so. Emergency Fund, Tax Saving and Retirement are three goals that you can start with.

6. Review spending, plan a budget for the new year and set up SIPs

It is important to look back at the year and see how much you spent. How much of it was planned and how much was impulsive and could have been avoided? Did you meet your savings target? If not then fix a savings target (20-30% of your salary is a good number to begin with) and set up automated savings for that in way of SIPs in Mutual Funds or Recurring Deposits depending on your preference of investment type. Set up your SIPs for a day close to the salary day so that you save first before spending rather than the other way round. Plan a budget for the rest of the amount and make sure you don’t exceed that in the new year.

If you feel you can do with some help regarding your finances,
then seek out the help of financial expert who can help you prepare a budget and ensure that you have adequate insurance and savings. The sooner you get a grip on your money, the better it is and it will also prevent you from making any expensive but avoidable money mistakes.
