Problems of today’s fast life

We have a unique problem in the 21st century. Even though we know everything, we still can’t get results.

We know that:

  • If we do yoga/exercise daily, we will be physically fit
  • If we eat home-cooked food, we will be healthy
  • If we avoid high sugar, salt and oily foods, we will have fewer ailments
  • If we invest regularly, we will be wealthy

Yes, we are all aware of it, but why can’t we follow these simple guidelines?

The reason is today's fast life in the era of Internet and mobile. Yes, they have made our lives easy, but they have also made us impatient.

In today’s world, we want instant gratification

Even a 30-minute Pizza delivery looks like a long waiting time, and we want it in 5-10 minutes

We want to be healthy by doing some quick exercises or eating superfoods

We want to be wealthy by some shortcuts

It’s like we are always in a hurry, as we want quick results…..

but what happens actually…we never reach on time…

Reason: we waste time, energy and money in quick solutions/shortcuts…and still don’t get the desired results even in long duration…

The problem is not the unawareness; in today's world, information is plentiful and freely available, but the execution.

So, what is the solution?

There are two things we need to understand,

First from the Kabir’s Doha

Constructions take time, and destruction happens in moments. Whether a baby to a grown-up man, a seed to a fruit-giving tree or constructing a building, anything or everything, it takes it’s own time before giving results. The same thing happens with health and wealth also, there is no shortcut, the earlier we understand this better we will be.

There is this famous quote from Bhagwat Geeta:

Nowadays, most of us are always focused on/worried about the results and don’t take the process seriously. Whereas the actual result lies in the process.

This quote tells us that we have to focus on the process, because the process is the only thing which is in our hands, results are not (in fact never) in our control.

Now, the issue is that we know that to get the positive results we need to give time and follow the process but still can’t do it, so what is solution?

Again, coming back to Bhagwat Geeta and Mahabharat, Arjun was a great warrior; however, when he was on the battlefield of Kuruskhetra, his mind and confidence were shaken. Finally, Lord Krishna motivated him for his duties and guided him to see things from the right perspective.

In today’s world

If we want to achieve our goals, we need a motivator, a guide/an advisor as a mentor who can keep us motivated on the right but time-consuming path. It is not that we don’t know how to achieve our goals, but an advisor (mentor) will nudge us in the right direction and keep us motivated in this long and frustrating journey towards our goals. He will help us to keep ourselves out from the distractions and shortcuts to remain focused on our final goals.

Remember:

Your Money BEHAVIOUR, NOT INCOME makes you wealthy

Most money problems ultimately boil down to what we believe and how we behave with money.  The effects our money behaviors have on our life can be uplifting, or they can be devastating.

When we have financial problems, it can often lead to other life problems.  When our finances are out of order, then other areas of our life tend to follow suit and vice versa. In this article let’s learn about different money mindsets which can change our behavior towards money and ultimately our destiny.

1.      We should value our Financial Security over the status

Wealthy people would rather have money in their bank account rather than expensive cars and branded items.  It can be a better option to live in an average house in an average neighborhood instead of a high-status neighborhood where we will have pressure to keep up with the neighbors.

Wealthy people don’t care so much about what other people think.  They’d much rather have financial peace, freedom, and security over fancy consumer goods and social status.

2.      We don’t need to change our Lifestyle if we win a lottery

To be wealthy, we should know that when we get extra income then it should not be wasted to show off. Smart people don’t increase their lifestyle to match it, they understand that a raise is not an excuse to get a bigger house, a new car, or more fancy stuff.

Wealth builders put their raises into savings and investments so that their money can make more money.

3.      We need to invest rather than wait for an occasion

It's always tempting to spend money rather than save it. People who are not actively building wealth tell themselves that they will start investing:

·        When they get their next raise

·        Next year

·        When they get out of debt

·        Once they get the house paid off

·        And a million other excuses

Wealthy people don’t make excuses about investing. They develop the financial discipline to consistently put money into investments, even making investing a priority during lean times. They educate themselves about investing or take guidance from an expert on how to put their money to work instead of stuffing it in a savings account or under a mattress.

4.      Spend less than earnings

Spending less than we earn is one of the most important habits.  There is no way we can build wealth if we consistently spend more than what we make.

People with wealthy habits understand that living a reasonable, frugal lifestyle is key.  Living on less than we make allows us to have money to set aside for wealth-building activities.

5.      Our Kids are our Assets

We should give good education to our kids which is a backbone for their future. Further, we should also teach them good financial habits.  They should know how to handle money, invest, and start money-making businesses so that they too can become financially independent someday.

Wealthy people don't allow grown kids to live with them indefinitely or depend on their parents to prop up their lifestyle.  Once the kids are grown up they’re expected to go out and earn their own way without depending on mom and dad’s constant financial help.

6.      Calculated Risk is Worth

To be wealthy we should be willing to take financial risks, as long as the risk is worth the reward.  We don’t need to gamble on penny stocks or other investments with long odds. But should put a certain amount (say 10%) of our portfolio into riskier investments.

Most people who don’t build wealth tend to be too conservative if they invest at all.  These people invest in things such as savings accounts, FDs, and other investments that have a very low risk of losing their money but have terrible returns which can’t even beat inflation.

Wealth builders consider riskier investments if they believe they will get a good return on their money without the potential of losing the entire investment.  Some of their favorite “riskier” investments are individual stocks, mutual funds, businesses, Alternate investments, art/collectibles, etc.

Yoga for your financial health

Yoga is good for your health. But what if we told you that there are a few yoga asanas that you can practice to better your financial health. That is right, you heard us right. Here are eight asanas that can be used as effective remedies for all your money ailments.

1. Asset Allocation-Asana

An asset allocation strategy that factors in age, goals, horizon, and risk appetite will lend the right balance to your investment plan. Meticulously following the strategy and rebalancing at regular intervals to ensure the mix is not altered will help prevent losses, book profits, and keep you on track to achieve your goals.

2. SIP-asana

With markets close to yearly lows, investing small sums systematically and adding lump sum if you have additional money is what you should do. Sticking to goal-oriented SIPs in will yield benefits over the long term. This systematic approach will help you remain calm during current volatile phases.

3. Diversification-Namaskar

A well-rounded portfolio will help in achieving all your long- and short-term financial goals. When you put your eggs in more than one basket, you spread risks and cushion the adverse performance of one asset class or a few instruments.

4. Shed the flabhaati

Diversification is good, but too much of something is never good. Having a big, fat portfolio of 15-20 mutual funds will not help. In all probability, several of the schemes will hold similar stocks, which means that they will not add any value. Avoiding investment overload will help you ward off distributors looking to churn your portfolio and hawk new fund offers.

 5. Contra-asana

Often, retail investors make the mistake of entering when markets are high and exiting in panic when they start tanking. Do not stop SIPs when markets dip or hoard equities when they head up. Investing systematically as per your plans, long-term goals and risk appetite will yield better results.

6. Tax-asana

While filing returns, follow the rules meticulously and complete the process ahead of the deadline to avoid errors. Seek professional help if needed. Filing income tax returns is an unavoidable activity, which is also complex in nature. Completing it well in time will reduce the hassles and scope for errors.

7. Budget-asana

Devise a monthly budget, prioritise needs over wants and ensure savings. Set aside 50% of your post-tax monthly income towards basic needs, 30% towards savings and wants can account for 20%. Adhering to a well-devised budget can rein in the tendency to overspend on discretionary items and keep the focus on important goals.

8. Relax-asana

Don't stray from your financial plan, take risky short-cuts, or bend rules. Prioritize your retirement over goals like children's higher education and marriage
