Investing in the highest returns giving assets won't make you wealthy, want to know why?

People often come to me and ask:

·        Which is the best mutual fund scheme where I can get the highest returns?

·        What are the investment options where I can get maximum returns in the shortest period?

Well, chasing returns is a fund manager’s job,

The job of a financial expert is

Not to chase the highest returns, but

1. To make you aware of your future financial needs

2. To help you to make right financial decisions

3. To guide you not to panic when the market falls steeply

4. To guide you not to be over-excited when the market rises sharply

5. Guide you not to make decisions on emotions but sound logic especially when the market behaves another way

6. To make you focus on your financial goals, not some quick bucks

7. Motivate you to save more and invest smartly

8. To caution you not to try shortcuts for making quick money

9. To Beware you of scams and fraud schemes that offer huge returns

10. To make you aware of various risks and protect you from them

11. To make you aware of your expenses and how to manage them

12. To make you aware of the benefits of compounding, continuity, and discipline in the investments.

13. To guide you about good and bad loans and how to avoid/come out of a debt trap

14. To guide you regarding Emergency Funds, Risk Management, and estate Planning

15. To suggest you those investment options that are suitable based on your age, risk profile, investment horizon and financial goals.

16. To do proper asset allocation

17. To guide your investment behaviour

18. And finally, to help you reach your financial goals smoothly

In Mahabharat, the best Archer Arjun needed the advise of Lord Krishna and Lord Ram asked for advise from Hanuman, Jamvanta and Vibhishana. Similarly, a Financial Advisor is required to achieve financial goals in life.

Remember: To become wealthy is more of a behavioural matter than just getting the highest returns, and a financial expert tries to Manage that....

Cricket and investing have few interesting Similarities

Cricket is the favourite game in India and also Indian’s saving is one of the highest percentages in the world.  While watching cricket we have noticed many similarities between Cricket and Investing. Let’s find out how they connect each other and what we can learn from cricket for our investments.

Physical Fitness is like Investor Awareness:

Be it cricket or any game Physical fitness is the basic thing because our performance depends on our fitness. Similarly for investments first we need to know about the basics of Investments. Our future wealth will depend on how much we are financially aware. It pays to do your research before making any decisions. An informed investor won’t follow the herd or be swayed by hearsay. And, when in doubt, always consult a professional on what course of action to take.

Proper Team Selection is like Asset Allocation

In a cricket team we need to have diverse players like fast and spin bowlers, batsmen, wicket keepers, fielders, etc. Similarly in our investment portfolio also we need a right mix of asset classes like equity, debt, real estate, cash and gold etc. A right mix of asset classes ensures that our portfolio won’t be affected by sudden fall in any one asset class.

Winning a Toss is like a Early Start

When a team wins the toss it has the advantage to start the game on it’s strength. Similarly when we start investing early we have enough time to accumulate wealth. Compounding is called as eight wonder of the world and the more we have time we will get much more.

Planning the Game is like Managing Risk

Every team has some core strength some are good in batting some in bowling and some are very good in fielding. They strategize their game accordingly. Similarly, every person has some strengths and weaknesses, we need to play on our strengths. For that first we should determine our risk profile and then invest based on our risk appetite (team strength), financial goals (score to win) and time horizon (number of overs left).

Taking Single like SIPs

There are time when we just need to keep adding something to scoreboard rather than trying to hit 4/6s in every ball. In Investing also doing regular investments (like monthly SIPs) makes a difference over a longer term. Occasional boundaries are like lumpsum investments but the discipline of systematic investing could result in a great score over time.

Falling Wickets is like Portfolio Review in Down Market

Sometimes it happens that few wickets fall quickly similarly in equity investments some time we may witness a substantial fall in the value of our holdings. However, this time is not to panic but have patience and play defensively. In that time we need to review our portfolio and seek professional help before making any changes to ensure long-term growth.

Powerplay is like maximising the returns

In cricket there are certain overs when there is field restrictions and every batsman wants to score maximum in those overs. Similarly in investing there is time when we may witness sharp correction in the market, this is time to increase the equity exposure to take maximum benefits of the market fall.

Coach is like your Financial Advisor

In crickets all the players are professional and very good in their area however still the team has a coach. He brings knowledge, experience, and expertise to the field who guides them based on the specific situations to make out most of it. Financial Advisor plays a similar role in investing. He plans strategies especially for you to achieve your goals by selecting different assets, allocating right proportion of asset mix, and other factors relevant to a person.

Finally, whether cricket or investing initial planning, right strategy and proper guidance is the keep to win the game and same applies for the game of wealth creation.

Facts Vs Biases about Investments

Bias is an illogical or irrational preference or prejudice held by an individual, which may also be subconscious. In the investments, if we make decisions based on bias it becomes more harmful as it directly affects our wealth. Hence in investments, we need to understand the facts so that the right decisions can be taken based on truth rather than our bias/emotions. Here are a few biases and the real facts to understand more about equity investments.

 1.      Equity is RISKY

Yes, it’s true for short-term investments or trading but when we talk about long-term equity investments the risk comes down substantially. According to few studies if we have invested in Nifty 50 (TRI) through SIPs there is only 0.1% chance of negative returns if the investment period is 5 years and 0% chance of negative returns if our investment period is more than seven years.

So, equity investments should be made for the long term only.

2.      All Mutual Funds are Equity Funds

Broadly Mutual funds are categorized into three types: Equity, Debt, and Hybrid funds.

Only Equity funds invest the entire amount in equities whereas debt funds invest only in debt products i.e. Bonds, Debentures, Govt Securities etc. Hybrid Funds have a mix of equity, debt, gold, real estate etc.

One should consult an Expert/Advisor to understand the differences and based on his/her investment horizon and risk appetite a fund should be selected.

3.      My Money is more Secured in Bank FD or Cash

Yes, when we keep our money in Fixed Deposit, we get a fixed interest rate which is not the case with equities. But the interest rate that we get could not beat inflation. The truth is that the purchasing power of money goes down. Let’s understand it by an example: if we have invested ₹ 100 in Bank FD for one year at an interest of 7.5% then at the end of the year we will get ₹ 107.50. However, due to inflation, the item which was priced at ₹100 is available at ₹ 110 after one year so we are actually at a loss of ₹ 2.50 (110-107.50).

Equity is the only asset class that beats inflation over the long term.

4.      I have invested so much in equity

The fact is that most of us have not invested even 10% of our total Net worth in equities but are worried all the time. To calculate the percentage allocation in equities we should add all our assets i.e. real estate properties, Bank FDs, PPF, EPF, Gold, equity etc to find the total net worth and then calculate the percentage of equities. Most of us have major investments in real estate and investment in equities would be the least but ironically, we are least bothered about real estate values and most worried about equities because the prices of equities are available easily daily whereas for real estate it is not.

Most of us need to increase our allocation to equities to beat inflation and keep our money growing to meet lifestyle expenses.

5.      I should track my investments on daily basis

Many people are obsessed with the price movements in the equity market. They feel that by checking the prices daily they can time the market by investing at cheaper prices and booking profits at higher levels regularly. The truth is that it is impossible to time the market, equity is for the long term and if we remain invested for the long term there is a very high probability to make better returns as compared to trading daily.

By daily looking at portfolio value we will not increase the profits but only our blood pressure.

6.      Equity is for short-term Intra-day Only

It is not. Trading and short-term investments in equities are riskier and a lot of studies have proved it. Short-term investments should be in debt products i.e. debt mutual funds or maybe short-term FDs whereas investments in equities should be for a longer time.

Beware, Trading looks more exciting but carries much more risk and we should not play with our serious money for these activities.

Finally, Investments are a serious business and we should take proper guidance from an expert who can guide us based on our short-term and long-term goals and on our specific needs and risk appetite.

Financial lessons from Ramayan

On 22nd January 2024, Ram Manidir’s Consecration at the great new mandir in Ayodhya was done. Ram is called Maryada Purshottam, who does the right things come what way. At this occasion let’s learn what good things we need to do for our financial life.

1. Cultivate discipline :

Lord Ram practiced "Dharma" in order to be right, responsible and disciplined in life. Apply a similar theory to your life. Save judiciously, spend carefully and invest wisely for a disciplined financial life.

2. Choose advisors wisely :

Kaikeyi took Manthara's advice which later resulted in separated family, hardships, loss of relationships, family disputes, and eventually Ramayana. Ram took advice from Hanuman, Jamvanta and Vibhisana and won the war.

Stay away from those trying to sell Lucrative offers and quick rich schemes who are disguised as advisors and coaches for their own benefit.

3. Contingency Fund :

Unexpectedly, Lord Ram was sent to 'Vanvas' for 14 Years and was forced to leave his luxurious Palace. Not everyone can live with such sudden changes in lifestyle. Have an adequate emergency fund to handle unforeseen circumstances.

4. Be Patient/Think Long Term :

During the 14 years of 'Vanvas', Lord Ram faced many ups and downs, including the kidnapping of Sita. Lord Ram patiently waited until the situation favorable, rather than choosing shortcuts. Stay invested for the long term, there is no shortcut to success.

5. Set your budget :

Set "Laxman Rekha" of your financial budget and make sure not to cross it due to luring online discounts. Understand the difference between need and want .... be financially disciplined.

6. Secure your life :

You are not Laxman, and there is no Hanuman to get Sanjeevani for you.... so get health & life insurance when you are healthy.

7. Believe in karma :

Lord Ram left the throne and for 14 years he lived in forests, but his good deeds paid and finally, he became the king of Ayodhya. So, continue to do good things and finally you will get the good results.

8. Build a Corpus :

Lord Ram, Sita, and Laxman left Ayodhya with nothing. They patiently built their network and Vanar Sena over the years in order to reach the objective of defeating the Ravan. It takes patience to build a corpus, to defeat inflation in the long run.

9. Wipe your slate and start over :

14-day Lanka War marked the defeat of evil and set the stage for a new path. Similarly, forget bad decisions that you made in the past and make informed decisions to streamline your financial journey.

Happy Ram Lala Consecration
