Teaching Kids about Money, Why and How ....

In the current materialistic world, it is very important to teach our kids about money. We should make them aware about why we should save and what is the value of money. In this post we will learn few things which can be used to make our kids more aware and sensible about money.

1. Saving Habit through a transparent Jar/Piggy Bank

The normal piggy banks are good, but it doesn’t give kids a visual. Instead of that if we use a clear jar, they can see the money growing. Yesterday, they had two hundred-rupee notes and today they got one more fifty rupee note! We can talk to them about this and make a big deal about it growing!

2. Show them that stuff costs money

We need to take action rather than just saying, for example when buying a toy for him, ask him to take out some money from his piggy bank and let him physically hand over the money to the shopkeeper. This simple action will have more impact than a five-minute lecture.

3. Set an example

A study made in one UK university found that money habits in children are formed by the time they’re 7 years old. Means they are watching us. If we are spending carelessly for anything or everything they’ll eventually notice. Or if we and our spouse spouse are arguing about money, they’ll notice that too. We should set healthy example for them and they’ll be much more likely to follow it when they get older.

4. Give commissions, not allowances

We can Pay our kids some commissions based on chores they do around the house like taking out the trash, cleaning their room, or helping in kitchen. This will make them understand that money is earned—it’s not just given to them.

5. Show opportunity cost

We should make them understand how to take decisions and what is the opportunity cost. For example, by telling him, “If you buy this video game, then you won’t have the money to buy that pair of sport shoes.” he should be able to weigh decisions and understand the possible outcomes.

6. Stress the importance of giving

Not just earning but giving is equally important. Once they start making a little money, we should teach them about giving. They can pick a temple, charity or even someone they know who needs a little help. Eventually, they’ll see how giving doesn’t just affect the people they give to, but the giver as well.

7. Avoid impulse buys

“Dad, I just saw this new game. My friend has it! Can we buy it please?” have you come across with this type of requests by your kids?  Instead of giving in, let your child know they can use their hard-earned commission to pay for it. But encourage your child to wait at least a day before they purchase anything over Rupees 100. It will likely still be there tomorrow, and they’ll be able to make that money decision with a level head (rather than an impulsive buy) the next day.

Teaching your children about money at any stage is going to take time on your part. It won’t always be easy. But if you want your children to know how to successfully manage their money when they get older, taking the time now will be worth it.

One of the best ways to teach your kids about handling money is to give them a chance to make some of their own!

What is Financial Independence and how to achieve it

What is Financial Independence?

Financial Independence is the status of having enough income to pay one's living expenses for the rest of one's life without having to be employed or dependent on others. Income earned without having to work a job is commonly referred to as passive income.

If a person can generate enough passive income to meet their needs from sources other than their primary occupation, they have achieved financial independence, regardless of age, existing wealth, or current salary.

For example, Ram a 25-year-old man has ₹10,000 expenses per month, and have assets that generate ₹10,000 or more per month, then he achieved financial independence and he is not required to work a regular job to pay his bills. On the other hand, Ramesh a 50-year-old earns ₹1,00,000 a month but has expenses that equals more than that per month, then he is financially not independent, as he still need to earn the difference each month to make all his payments.

However, the effects of inflation must be considered. If a person needs ₹1000/month for living expenses today, he will need ₹1050/month next year and ₹1102.50/month the following year to support the same lifestyle, assuming a 5% annual inflation rate. Therefore, if the person in the above example obtains only the same passive income from a perpetuity, then in future he will lose his financial independence because of inflation.

How to achieve Financial Independence

As mentioned above there are two sides for achieving financial independence, one is assets and other is expenses, hence we need to focus our energy in: accumulating assets or reducing their expenses.

Actions on the Asset Side:

1. Automate your Savings: Invest your money by auto debit facilities through options like SIP/RD the same day you receive your pay check, so it never even touches your hands, avoiding temptation of spending it entirely.

2. Invest in assets which can beat inflation: FDs gives fix returns but mostly below the inflation rates, so to create a corpus which can beat inflation we need to invest in those assets which can generate higher returns than inflation like equity stocks.

3. Continuous Education to Update & Upgrade: The biggest asset for you is yourself so we need to update our skill to match with current scenario which will help in our income growth and future prospects. We should also update about current tax laws and investment related information so as to get the best out of it.

4. Maintain Your Assets: We need to take good care of our assets like home, car, electronic gadgets even the shoes and clothes so that they last longer. As the cost of maintenance is a fraction of the cost of replacement, it’s an investment not to be missed.

5. Take Care of your Health: There is saying that Health is Wealth. The principle of asset maintenance also applies to the body. Invest in good health with regular visits to doctors and dentists, and follow health advice about any problems you encounter. Many problems can be prevented—with lifestyle changes such as more exercise and a healthier diet. Obesity and ailments make insurance premiums skyrocket, and poor health may force earlier retirement with lower monthly income. Taking a proper health Insurance cover to manage hospital bills is very important.

6. Take an Expert’s Help: An expert can guide you about your needs, plan out your financial goals, corpus required, and how to reach those goals by proper selection of assets. Taking an experts assistance ensures that your are moving in right direction.

Action on Liability Side:

1. Set Life Goals: To achieve the financial independence first we should know what exactly we need to achieve it. So we should first write down how much we have as of now, what the lifestyle entails, and at what age this should be achieved. The more specific our goals, the higher the likelihood of achieving them. Next, count backward to the current age and establish financial mileposts at regular intervals. Write it all down neatly and put the goal sheet at the very beginning of the financial binder.

2. Make a budget: The best way to guarantee that all expenses are paid and savings are on track is making a budget and sticking to it. This regular exercise also reinforces our goals and bolsters resolve against the temptation to splurge.

3. Pay of Credit Card bills in full: Credit cards and similar high-interest consumer loans are toxic to wealth-building. We need to pay off the total dues each month. Home Loans, Education loans, mortgages, and similar loans typically have much lower interest rates; paying them off is not an emergency. However we should be paying all EMIs on time as it will build a good credit rating.

4. Watch your Credit Score: The credit score determines what interest rate we will be offered when buying a new car or taking a home loan. It may also impacts seemingly unrelated things. It is important to check credit report at regular intervals (now it’s free to get one credit report every year) to ensure that there are no erroneous black marks ruining your good name.

5. Negotiate: Most of us are hesitant to negotiate for goods and services, worrying that it makes them seem cheap. Overcome this cultural handicap and we can save thousands each year.

6. Live below your means: Living below your means that we are saving something for the future by not spending everything today. Mastering a frugal lifestyle by having a mind-set of living life to the fullest with less is not so difficult. Indeed, many wealthy individuals developed a habit of living below their means before rising to affluence.

If we adopt these basic principles we can be financially independent much before we actually be unable to work.

How to stick to New Year’s Resolutions !!

Last year I have written an article on Resolution for 2018: Be Healthy & Wealthy.  Similarly many of us make resolutions every year, but as the time goes by motivation to stick with those resolutions weakens and after a couple of months we are back to our old life style.

So what should we do to keep them actually working?

Generally we make resolutions in terms of what we shall not do and end up thinking more about it and reinforcing the earlier habitual decision. On the other side we decide to do certain things in a particular way and make it so rigid that slipping up is the final outcome leading to disappointment.
We human’s understand the reward and punishment/ pain easily. We want rewards for our actions and dislikes the pain. Hence if a new actions do not result in pleasure or positive outcomes, we lose the interest.

So how should we make resolutions which are easy to implement and keep us motivated to continue with it? Let us take few example from the world of Personal Finance.

1. Can’t Control your Spending Spree, Let’s Try this!

To Control Spending we make a resolution to limit our use of credit card or EMIs for purchases. But it does not work as we try to restrict the things in our old habit. So let us change this by making a resolution to use Debit card instead of Credit card. This way we are creating new habit where we would be spending money which we already have in our Bank Account and as we spend our bank balance goes down, which means we see the immediate outcome of our expenses and have a limit only up to the money in our bank account. This could be more effective way to control our expenses.

2. Want to Save but don’t left with money at the end of the Month, Try this!

We all know saving is very important so as to have money for future requirements, and most of us want to save but by the end of the month when we check our bank account we find nothing is left to save. So how to change this habit. Let us change this habit by saving on the day we get our salary rather than waiting for last day of the month. Systematic Investment Plans or better known as SIPs are the best way wherein we can decide the date and amount to invest in and the money gets debited directly form the account. We can also target our savings to a specific goals and have a picture on mind that by this money we will get this particular thing, this will further motivate us to save more.

3. Want to upgrade with new things on EMIs, Try this!

We get attracted to new things in the market. New Smart TVs, Mobiles, New Cars and so on. Even though we may have brought it just last year we want to buy new with the new features. Companies market them in such a way that we just get carried away with their new features. Let’s us check whether we are using all the features of our current mobile rather than just running behind to buy a new one. Do we actually need that item with new feature? Here what is more important is to focus on what we already have and are we enjoying/utilising it fully so as to redirect our attention on using things effectively rather than acquiring them. We need to take time and enjoy the things which we already have rather than focussing on what we don’t have by this we may be able to redirect thinking on more positive way.

Saving is a decision where we deny our self the pleasures of spending. The money we save is set aside for an unknown future which can be used to enjoy something in the present. Our human brain cannot trade off the immediate joy for a distant good very easily. Many of us make a virtue of living for the present, to guise our inability to save. Investing is a long term activity that does not show up gains too soon to keep us motivated hence we need to make our savings more attractive and target oriented so that we have the reasons to save and not spend.
