Cricket and investing have few interesting Similarities

Cricket is the favourite game in India and also Indian’s saving is one of the highest percentages in the world.  While watching cricket we have noticed many similarities between Cricket and Investing. Let’s find out how they connect each other and what we can learn from cricket for our investments.

Physical Fitness is like Investor Awareness:

Be it cricket or any game Physical fitness is the basic thing because our performance depends on our fitness. Similarly for investments first we need to know about the basics of Investments. Our future wealth will depend on how much we are financially aware. It pays to do your research before making any decisions. An informed investor won’t follow the herd or be swayed by hearsay. And, when in doubt, always consult a professional on what course of action to take.

Proper Team Selection is like Asset Allocation

In a cricket team we need to have diverse players like fast and spin bowlers, batsmen, wicket keepers, fielders, etc. Similarly in our investment portfolio also we need a right mix of asset classes like equity, debt, real estate, cash and gold etc. A right mix of asset classes ensures that our portfolio won’t be affected by sudden fall in any one asset class.

Winning a Toss is like a Early Start

When a team wins the toss it has the advantage to start the game on it’s strength. Similarly when we start investing early we have enough time to accumulate wealth. Compounding is called as eight wonder of the world and the more we have time we will get much more.

Planning the Game is like Managing Risk

Every team has some core strength some are good in batting some in bowling and some are very good in fielding. They strategize their game accordingly. Similarly, every person has some strengths and weaknesses, we need to play on our strengths. For that first we should determine our risk profile and then invest based on our risk appetite (team strength), financial goals (score to win) and time horizon (number of overs left).

Taking Single like SIPs

There are time when we just need to keep adding something to scoreboard rather than trying to hit 4/6s in every ball. In Investing also doing regular investments (like monthly SIPs) makes a difference over a longer term. Occasional boundaries are like lumpsum investments but the discipline of systematic investing could result in a great score over time.

Falling Wickets is like Portfolio Review in Down Market

Sometimes it happens that few wickets fall quickly similarly in equity investments some time we may witness a substantial fall in the value of our holdings. However, this time is not to panic but have patience and play defensively. In that time we need to review our portfolio and seek professional help before making any changes to ensure long-term growth.

Powerplay is like maximising the returns

In cricket there are certain overs when there is field restrictions and every batsman wants to score maximum in those overs. Similarly in investing there is time when we may witness sharp correction in the market, this is time to increase the equity exposure to take maximum benefits of the market fall.

Coach is like your Financial Advisor

In crickets all the players are professional and very good in their area however still the team has a coach. He brings knowledge, experience, and expertise to the field who guides them based on the specific situations to make out most of it. Financial Advisor plays a similar role in investing. He plans strategies especially for you to achieve your goals by selecting different assets, allocating right proportion of asset mix, and other factors relevant to a person.

Finally, whether cricket or investing initial planning, right strategy and proper guidance is the keep to win the game and same applies for the game of wealth creation.

Financial lessons from Ramayan

On 22nd January 2024, Ram Manidir’s Consecration at the great new mandir in Ayodhya was done. Ram is called Maryada Purshottam, who does the right things come what way. At this occasion let’s learn what good things we need to do for our financial life.

1. Cultivate discipline :

Lord Ram practiced "Dharma" in order to be right, responsible and disciplined in life. Apply a similar theory to your life. Save judiciously, spend carefully and invest wisely for a disciplined financial life.

2. Choose advisors wisely :

Kaikeyi took Manthara's advice which later resulted in separated family, hardships, loss of relationships, family disputes, and eventually Ramayana. Ram took advice from Hanuman, Jamvanta and Vibhisana and won the war.

Stay away from those trying to sell Lucrative offers and quick rich schemes who are disguised as advisors and coaches for their own benefit.

3. Contingency Fund :

Unexpectedly, Lord Ram was sent to 'Vanvas' for 14 Years and was forced to leave his luxurious Palace. Not everyone can live with such sudden changes in lifestyle. Have an adequate emergency fund to handle unforeseen circumstances.

4. Be Patient/Think Long Term :

During the 14 years of 'Vanvas', Lord Ram faced many ups and downs, including the kidnapping of Sita. Lord Ram patiently waited until the situation favorable, rather than choosing shortcuts. Stay invested for the long term, there is no shortcut to success.

5. Set your budget :

Set "Laxman Rekha" of your financial budget and make sure not to cross it due to luring online discounts. Understand the difference between need and want .... be financially disciplined.

6. Secure your life :

You are not Laxman, and there is no Hanuman to get Sanjeevani for you.... so get health & life insurance when you are healthy.

7. Believe in karma :

Lord Ram left the throne and for 14 years he lived in forests, but his good deeds paid and finally, he became the king of Ayodhya. So, continue to do good things and finally you will get the good results.

8. Build a Corpus :

Lord Ram, Sita, and Laxman left Ayodhya with nothing. They patiently built their network and Vanar Sena over the years in order to reach the objective of defeating the Ravan. It takes patience to build a corpus, to defeat inflation in the long run.

9. Wipe your slate and start over :

14-day Lanka War marked the defeat of evil and set the stage for a new path. Similarly, forget bad decisions that you made in the past and make informed decisions to streamline your financial journey.

Happy Ram Lala Consecration

Why everyone needs a Financial Advisor

Many people feel that managing your own money is quite simple, but is it really the case?

Financial planning is not just making the investments but much more than that. Apart from Investments it includes liability management, risk management, goal-based planning, estate planning, tax planning, etc.

Some of the questions we should ask ourselves...

1.   How many of us can confidently say that we have adequate life insurance and health cover? In India...most would be underinsured and worst; not insured at all.

2.      How much and which loan you should be taking? Easy availability of loans, zero interest EMIs etc attracts us more but does it really make sense to go for it...

3.      How do you know if you have selected the right investment product? Actually, you won’t know till you face the adversity; till then, the highest return-giving option looks the best.

4.      Does your family know how to settle any obligations or property claims after your death? While the number of insured in India is just 5%, only 0.5% in the country has a will.

5.   Do you know which Mediclaim policy suits you based on your age, health, and demographics? While taking a policy is easy, getting the right claims is not so easy, even in cashless claims a significant part falls on the insured.

6.   Do you know what will be the tax implications on specific investments? In some cases, tax is deducted on source (TDS) while in some cases tax is applicable only when you withdraw. Which will suit you best will depend on the person’s needs.

7.      Do you know how much money you will need for your retirement after 25 years, or how much your son’s foreign education will cost you after ten years? Most people are under-invested because they have no idea of how much should they invest for their goals. In the rush to generate better returns, people make investing mistakes and can’t achieve simple possible goals.

And the Investment Puzzle makes it more complicated...

In India, we have more than 1,500 mutual fund schemes, over 400 portfolio management services (PMS) providers, 200-plus alternative investment funds (AIFs), more than 500 non-convertible debentures (NCDs) and bonds, over 100 fixed deposit options, dozens of govt saving schemes and thousands of other investment products. How does one decide which one to invest in and which ones to avoid?

Besides that, how many of us understand the right asset allocation to have in accordance with our risk profiles, time to the goal, liquidity needs, and return expectations?

To achieve our financial goals, we not only need to decide the right asset class or product category, but also zero in on specific funds, asset management companies, fund managers etc. Remember, deciding based on past performance is not the best solution...as in many cases last year’s best performer can be in the worst performer’s list next year.

Behavioral issues need handholding...

Investment is not just choosing the right products but also keeping emotions under control. Let’s say you know it all, but remember wealth management is less of investment management and more of behavioural management. Will you hold your investments for 25 years? We keep on hearing stories about how someone bought ₹10,000 of stock ‘X’, it would be worth ₹100 crore now, but how many of us have really held on for so long?

Investing is not as simple as it looks.

Managing risks requires expertise...

Risk management is a crucial element of financial planning that most investors tend to ignore. Having adequate life insurance cover can ensure that your family’s needs and goals are taken care of after you are not around. An adequate health cover can ensure that you don’t have to take a significant hit on your savings and investments in case of a medical emergency and ensure that it covers even after accounting for medical inflation. Similarly, how much diversification is optimum for your investment portfolio so that it aligns with your risk tolerance?

Understanding tax implications on your investments is also very important where an advisor can guide you based on your customized requirements.

So, you often need a friend, philosopher, and guide to help you through the journey. Here is where a good financial advisor can help you to sail your financial journey smoothly. His expertise and guidance can be invaluable in helping you make informed and strategic financial decisions.

And finally, remember that even the best Archer Arjun needed the advise of Lord Krishna and Lord Ram asked for advise from Jamvanta and Vibhishana.

Check your Risk Profile

My Friend Raj is an engineer who is good in saving, He is saving money for past many years, however all his money is going in fixed Deposits. One day while discussing generally, he told me this and I asked him why is he keeping everything in FDs, he replied he is interested to invest in higher yielding comparatively risky investment avenues but he don’t know how much risk he can take and what is suitable option based on his own risk profile that’s why he ended up in FDs.

Well this is a very common thing I heard from many other investors. So the question is how to gauge your risk and then how to match the investment options with the risk profile. So let us simplify the Risk profiling.

1.      Segregate Goals
Firstly we need to segregate each and every goal based on time and amount required. There could be different goals like next vacation tour in holidays, buying a car or, retirement planning etc.

2.      Setting Time frame
After segregating the goals we need to setup a time frame for these goals, which will help them decide how much investment risk they can take for better returns. For example vacation holidays could be of short term like next summer season, buying a car may be a target of three years and retirement planning is required for the age of 60. Each goal has certain time line to achieve them.

3.      Choosing the Right Investment option
Once goals are defined and time frame is fixed. The investment can be made based on the time horizon and fund requirements. Setting a time frame for goals will help to decide how much investment risk can be taken for better returns.

Here we need to understand that some of the investments may give high returns but the returns may be volatile over the short term. Such investments require a sufficiently long investment time frame in which the volatility will smoothen out. On the other hand very safe investment options for long term may not be able to match the return potential from the other investment options.

Sometimes we may be tempted to assign high return investments for their short- term goals if they have fallen behind in terms of the goal amount. But the risk in doing that is we may find that the value of the investments has dropped when the money is actually needed.

While selecting investments based on the time horizon of their goals, we should also remember that a longer investment horizon alone does not make a fundamentally bad investment less risky. We need to select only sound investment options/instruments after evaluating their strengths and features.

By aligning their investments to the goal horizon & time frame we can ensure that the level of risk is appropriate without being too high. This way we can put our savings at risk to earn good returns without putting our financial goals at risk from inadequate funds.

We also need to understand that every person has their own financial goals and risk appetite. While doing risk profiling we need to understand the same before selecting the investment options.

Mutual Funds are not just Right, they are Better also

There are various options available for investments but why mutual funds stands out as compared to insurance products, let's understand it in more detail.

1. Mutual Funds are not an insurance but an investment product. Here our money is invested in market securities so that we get a better and inflation hedged returns which can meet our future financial requirements/goals.

2. Insurance means if something happens to the policy holder then his family/nominee will get a pre-defined lum-sum money. Although no one can fill the gap of that person emotionally however this money helps the family members to get financial support.

3. In Insurance only the cover amount is fixed not the bonus amount. Bonus is declared every year based on the company’s returns like in case of mutual funds.

4. In Insurance to cover your risk tem insurance products can be taken, where the premium amount is much less as compared to normal insurance policies.

5. For example if a 30 Year old person wants one crore coverage. Then if he takes normal policy of Jeevan Anand (with 35 years coverage) then he has to pay a premium of ₹2,99,434 (₹2,86,540 premium +₹12,894 tax). The same one crore coverage can be taken by LIC’s term insurance policy Jeevan Amulya where the premium will be only ₹32,096 (₹27,200 premium+ ₹4,896 tax). Please also note that in case of Jeevan Anand, policy holder has to pay a tax of ₹12,894 every year in which he did not gets any returns.

6. In mutual funds there is no tax at the time of investments and your whole money is invested in the scheme without any deduction. Whereas in case of Insurance approx. 4-5% of total premium goes to tax. Yes it is 4-5% of the total premium in which you do not get any returns. Since your investment amount is reduced so only because of this reason the total returns on investments comes down by 4-5% (actually it will be much more but for simple calculation let’s assume that only).

7. However no Insurance agent tells about term insurance, why? Because in term insurance schemes the commission to agents is very low which makes it unattractive from selling point of view. And the argument given is “You don’t get any return on term insurance”. Do you get any returns in Mediclaim policy or car insurance if there is no claim? then why do we need returns in life insurance? If we take term insurance and invest the remaining amount in a good return products then we can get multiple time returns as compared to normal insurance products. As well as our life is also covered by right product.

8. For example as mentioned in point no. 5, if we take term insurance instead of Jeevan Anand and invest the remaining amount ₹ 2,67,338  in a mutual fund with expected 10% P.a. then we can get almost ₹ 7.97 crores in 35 years.  And remember this money is additional to the insurance cover of one crore.

9. It is said that mutual funds invest in share market where your all money can be wiped out. Let’s understand this more.

(i) First thing mutual funds also invest in bond/debt market. In fact almost 60% of total mutual fund money is invested in Debt market, yes this is the same market where LIC also invests.

(ii) Secondly mutual funds have various different type of schemes wherein a person can invest for a week to a year or 5-10-20-30 years.

(iii) Mutual funds have schemes which invest only in bond/debt market and not a single penny is invested in equity shares. A person can invest in different schemes based on his/her financial goals, risk appetite and investment horizon.

(iv) There is no binding for investment in mutual funds, if due to some reason someone wants to stop the investments it is possible without any penalty whereas in case of insurance if we stop the policy in between it can lapse or forfeit.

(v) In mutual funds you can start investments with as low as ₹500.

(vi) In mutual funds you can increase, decrease the amount any time. You can stop the investment and also can restart as per your convenience.  All these facilities are not available in Insurance.

(vii) Share market goes ups and downs, it is volatile and this is the fact, but if we invest our money for long term like we do in insurance then chances of losses are very rare.

(viii) Share market is a reflector of the country’s economy. If economy is growing and getting stronger then share market also goes up. For example in 1979 BSE Sensex was 100 points which is today at 33000+. This is true that it goes down in between but it also comes back from its lows and goes up again.  Like our incomes is growing similarly as the companies make more profits then there share prices also goes up.

10. Mutual fund companies provides all details where the investor’s money is invested, Insurance Company’s do not provide these details.

11. All the portfolio details of each and every schemes of mutual funds are provided at the website of the company on monthly basis as well as other websites also. Whereas Insurance Company do not provide any details where they have invested the money this itself shows who is more transparent and honest.

12. “Mutual Funds are subject to Market Risk” this warning is given by mutual funds so that if a person is investing he/she should be aware about the risks involved and invest only after having full information. Mutual funds give back all returns (after deducting expenses) and do not keep a single penny with themselves. Insurance company do declare bonuses but it is discretionary and not necessary that they pass on all the profits.

13. The NAV (Net Asset Value) of mutual funds are declared everyday which is not the case for insurance; therefore Funds Mangers have to very actively manage and perform in case of mutual funds this is also one reason that their returns are better as compared to Insurance products.

14. Fund Manager of Mutual funds knows that if I do not perform then investor can take out his money whereas in insurance company they knows that once the investor has taken a policy he will most probably continue as otherwise it will get lapsed/forfeited therefore they do not have pressure to outperform. This is also a reason that most of the mutual funds do better than insurance products.

15. Insurance companies are legally bound to pay the insurance cover amount only. How much bonus is to be paid depends on performance of their investments and surplus money which is not guaranteed. And as mentioned at point no. 5 for life cover we can take term insurance then why should we buy normal insurance product by paying 9.5 times more for the same guaranteed amount?

16. In mutual funds there is very small commission as compared to insurance products.

17. Insurance products are generally sold by creating fear (what will happen to your family if you are not there) and emotional blackmail which is a negative marketing. Mutual funds are sold to meet your future financial plans/goals when you and your family both will be there and can enjoy the money which is a positive marketing.

TAKE INSURANCE FOR LIFE COVER AND INVEST IN MUTUAL FUNDS TO MEET YOUR FUTURE GOALS
